What is the name of the first female R&B singer signed to Def Jam Records? The answer after the jump...
The answer is singer Alyson Williams! Before there was a Rihanna, there was Alyson Williams, the self-proclaimed first lady of Def Jam. After signing with Def Jam in 1987, she released her debut album, Raw, which spun the hits "Sleep Talk", "Just Call My Name", and "I Need Your Lovin" which charted at #3, #4, and #5 on the Billboard R&B charts respectively. Raw, released in 1989, charted at #25, followed by her self-titled album, Alyson Williams (Columbia), in '92 at #31. Her third album, It's About Time, released in 2004, failed to chart but received warm reviews from long-time fans.
Here she is sitting with legendary producer/songwriter Quincy Jones and Denzel Washington (from a pic I snatched off her Twitter page). According to her Facebook, she is now the CEO of A.W.P. (A Woman's Prerogative) Inc. She still looks great. Check out the the video to one of my favs "I Need Your Love"...
